The Gladiators secured their biggest win of the season with 3 goals from MOM Simran Lall, 2 goals a piece for Harry Winkley & Tom Ellis and 1 from Sam Amiri. Effort went to the whole team for the superb display of passing football and it would have been a much higher score if it were not for the opposition’s Goalkeeper who kept the rampant Gladiators at bay.

U10  Beaulieu Jets  1  Fleet Town Gladiators  1  (SPL Div 2)
Once again we were all left scratching our heads at the end of the game on how the Gladiators didn’t manage to secure all 3 points, when we practically dominated the game from start to finish, but just didn’t seem to be able to know how to put the ball into the opposition’s goal. We started the game the brightest with no sign of the long break having any effect, with Tom, Simran and Harry combining well as we lay siege to the Beaulieu goal. Sam was putting in a true captain’s performance showing good skill on the ball and threading through some inch perfect passes but to no avail as we couldn’t seem to find the final touch to put the ball home. Once again we didn’t make the most of all our early pressure and half way through the first half we went behind to a loose ball that had been failed to be cleared in defence with the Beaulieu player prodding the ball home from close range. We almost equalised straight from the restart when Tom ran half the length of the pitch before striking a fierce shot that the goalkeeper saved well. Several close misses followed with Harry firing into the side netting from a tight angle, Simran somehow diverting the ball just over the bar off his knee from close range and Sam going close round the post from long range. Ben came on for Simran on the left wing and once again started to show his strength with several forging runs down the wing. Whilst at the back the defensive partnership of Marcus and Jack and Andrew in goal were proofing resolute against the quick Beaulieu counter attacks. So the first half ended with us being one goal down. Sam took a well deserved break with Ben replacing him in the centre of midfield and Simran coming back onto the left wing, and once again we were pressing for the equalising goal. Simran seemed to have a new lease of life and started to influence the game more and more with his running down the wing, combining well with Ben in midfield and Tom upfront and this combination provided the much deserved break through mid way through the 2nd half when Ben and Harry exchanged passes before releasing Tom down the right wing who drove in a fierce shot which the keeper did well to save but could only parry out to the edge of the area where Simran coolly brought the ball down moved to his left to create space for him to drill the ball into the corner of the net to make it 1-1. The Gladiators were fired up now and immediately were on the attack again with Tom through one on one with only the opposition’s goalkeeper to beat, but the keeper made judged Tom’s shot well and made a fine save down low to his left. The Gladiators sensed victory but unfortunately started to become tired which left us exposed on the counter attack, luckily Jack, Mark and Ben towards the end of the game managed to stop any damage. Andrew was becoming increasingly busy making a couple of fine stops and intercepting an attack when the defence had been beaten. Hearts were in mouths when the Referee awarded a soft free kick just outside the area, but luckily the wall served its purpose and deflected the ball wide of the danger zone, which was justice as this was the only free kick of the game despite several misplace tackles on the Fleet players that had gone unrewarded. The Opposition then went very close to snatching the win when one of their unmarked players shot wide of the post when through on gaol against Andrew. We still had a couple of changes to seal the win with Simran going close on a couple of occasions; one chance identical to his goal but this time being saved by the keeper and firing just over after once again controlling the ball down well. Shouts for a penalty were turned down by the ref, when the Beaulieu player slid in and clearly stopped the ball going out of play with his hand for a corner, but it would have been a harsh decision at this level even by Pete’s standards!! So the game ended at 1-1, and despite the chances that the boys created, we could very easily have lost the game at the end. This was still a very impressive display of football especially when considering that this is their first competitive game for well over a month and a half. Beaulieu had managed to play the previous weekend and this certainly showed towards the end of the game when the Gladiators started to tire. We also only didn’t have the option of fresh legs as we only had 1 spare player after Luke’s dare devil scooter accident!! So all in all the boys at times played some sublime football and passing and we have every confidence that we will find our shooting boots again soon and record a long overdue victory. I’m not sure where that now leaves us in the league as after all there were another 2 or 3 games played today (including the league leader Staines) Next week we are away again to Worplesdon Rangers who are just behind us in the league so this is going to be tough game, but hopefully we can get back to winning ways. Final Score: Beaulieu Jets 1 v Gladiators 1 Scorers: Simran Lall (1) MOM was awarded to Simran Lall for his endless running and coolly taken goal. Effort award went to Marcus James for the 3rd game in a row for his solid performance once again in defence.

U10  Walton and Hersham  5  Fleet Town Gladiators  3  (SPL Div 2)
Despite great performances from MoM Ben Short and Effort winner Marcus James and some excellent football Fleet lost their 1st league game of the season. Two goals from Simran Lall and one from Harry Winkley were not enough to earn a result Fleet deserved.

U10  Fleet Town Gladiators  1  Staines Lammas  1  (SPL Div 2)
Once again the Gladiators struggled to overcome a resolute opposition with lots of goal mouth action but just not finding the final touch to secure the win. In fact if it was not for some fantastic finger tip saves from Andrew in goal Staines could quite easily have nicked the victory that would have been a harsh result. This was very much a game where both goalkeepers had brilliant performances keeping their respective sides in the game and both deserving of MOM awards. Despite our requests to attack from the starting whistle, the Gladiators made another slow start to the game and soon found themselves behind to a cool finish from the dangerous Staines forward. He had been put clean through on goal by a lofted ball after indecision in the centre of our midfield and giving the opposition to much time to control the ball. This seemed to wake the Gladiators up and we at last started to makes some passes though the final ball was still lacking to break the well organised Staines Lammas defence down. The introduction of Sam & Luke mid way through the 1st half seemed to have an immediate effect with us taking more control of the midfield. Sam started to bring the ball down and was breaking their attacks down, coolly playing the ball out to Harry and Luke on the wings. Up to this point our wingers were almost anonymous! Their were good interchanges in play and we started to pass the ball around. This in turn lead to our best period of the first half, with Sam having 3 very good efforts on goal making their keeper make some good saves. Harry then was played in by Sam and had a rasping effort hit the cross bar. But it was just not to be with the opposition going in 1-0 up at half time. Special mentions go to Luke for his first touch of the ball and coolness, instead of kicking the ball up field when under pressure he coolly turned the opposition players and passed the ball out of trouble. The defensive partnership of Jack and Marcus were also having a fantastic game keeping the Staines Lammas danger man out of trouble. When he did manage to elude them Andrew was measure to any goal threats. The Gladiators started the 2nd half with much more purpose, and straight from the off were attacking the Staines goal. Simran was put through on goal a couple of times but unfortunately just couldn’t find the finishing touch whilst under pressure from their defenders. Ben who had taken over from Jack in defence looked more confident in his familiar role and even managed to dribble the ball practically the whole length of the pitch before laying off a perfect pass to the forward line. Our relentless pressure soon paid off with a fantastic long range strike from Harry that left the Staines goalie with no chance as the ball flew into the far bottom corner on the goal. Tom came back onto the pitch and almost had an immediate effect with a couple of brilliant runs down the wing and putting over some pin perfect crosses only that just needed a touch to put them into the empty net. He also saw a shot on the turn just go wide which finally denied him a goal for the first time in a match this season. The boys could now sense the win and were dangerous on the attack and could have scored if it were not for the Staines goalkeeper, pulling off some brilliant saves on the goal line when the ball just needed that extra touch to push it out of the mud, it was that close!! Unfortunately with all our attacking play we were leaving big holes in midfield leaving us very exposed on the counter attack which allowed the Staines midfield and quick striker to capitalise with Andrew pulling off some fantastic finger tip saves when a winning goal for the opposition seemed inevitable. Our midfield and defence were getting tired and we just seemed to not be able get our tackles in, therefore leading to several one on ones between the Staines dangerousman and Andrew in goal. Luckily Andrew managed to be equal to the task and in the end kept us in the game until the final whistle blew. So 1-1 the final score which was most probably a fair result, with the 2nd half being very much one for both goalkeepers and a superb goal from Harry. Final Score: Fleet Gladiators 1 v Staines Lammas 1 Scorers: Harry (1) MOM went to Andrew for pulling off at least 3 crucial saves from the Staines Lammas Striker to secure the draw. Effort award was given Harry Winkley for his superb long distance strike and true captain’s performance.

U10  Hurst Park  3  Fleet Town Gladiators  4  (SPL Div 2)
The score line doesn’t really tell the full story of this game with the Gladiators having so many attacks and shots on goal not managing to find the back of the net. Due to the 10am KO and the game being near Hampton Court it meant that we had to make an early start with horrendous weather conditions. When we got the destination the driving rain and wind seemed to be at its worst. Luckily the pitch was well drained (though very small and uneven) which meant the long journey meant that the game could go ahead. Straight from the kick off you could see how the game would be affected by the conditions, with the ball sticking in the mud and hard to pass the ball. The size of the pitch restricted our play meaning that it was hard to find space and the goal areas were congested. Credit to Luke on the left wing and Jack at right back who were both trying to get the ball down, were running with the ball and making some good passes despite the awful conditions. We had all of the play in the first half but just couldn’t seem to get the ball on target with shot upon shot going wide of the goal or the ball getting stuck in the mud. Due to the size of the pitch every player on the pitch had goal chances including from efforts from Ben, Marcus x 2, Jack and Luke, but all went wide of the mark. Against the run of play Hurst Park scored direct from an in-swinging corner using the swirling wind to their advantage in causing confusion in our defence and an unfortunate Andrew parrying the ball into our own net. Chance upon chance slipped away, but the Gladiators kept battling and eventually Tom rifled a shot into the top left hand corner for the net (though initially the referee thought that the ball had gone wide of the goal when in fact it had gone in the goal and through a hole in the net! In fairness the Ref was brilliant today allowing the game to flow under very hard conditions). So 1-1 at half time. The 2nd half continued in a similar pattern, with the Gladiators pressing hard for a goal, however once again Hurst scored from a corner with Andrew making a good save high up, only for the ball to fall to one of 3 unmarked opposition players to prod the ball over the line to make it 2-1 to the home team. We soon equalised with a good run and finish from Tom for his 2nd of the game to make it 2-2, only to then loose concentration and allow yet another goal in from cross with an unmarked Hurst player finishing well into the bottom left corner to put Hurst back in front for the 3rd time. We continued to have all of the play with more chances going begging, including both Tom and Harry hitting the post with Sam, Simran, Ben and Luke all narrowly going wide. Eventually we managed to find some space when one of the Hurst Star players left the pitch injured, and a good passing move saw Simran coolly slotting the ball home on the left hand side to make it 3-3. Soon after and with little time left on the clock saw us break away on from a Hurst attack and a good passing move allowed Harry to smash the ball into the net for the winner. The final whistle eventually came with some relief as it meant that all the parents and players could finally get out of the driving rain & wind. A truly battling performance having to come back from behind 3 times to eventually win and keep up our unbeaten start to the season. Well done to all the boys (and parents) today.

U10  Burpham Eagles  2  Fleet Town Gladiators  2  (Cup)
It was definitely a game of 2 halves today with a very flow start for the Gladiators in this preliminary round cup match against Burpham Eagles who play in the league above us. Gladiators had most of the play in the 1st half but just didn’t seem to be quick enough to the ball and our first touch seemed to be letting us down. All over the pitch we were struggling to pass the ball against a well organised opposition. Our slow start was soon punished when we left an unmarked player running in at the far post to tap the ball into the net. From the restart we started show a little more urgency with Sam making some crucial tackles and starting to command the central midfield role well and Marcus and Simran cutting out the opposition’s forward runs. Unfortunately we conceded an almost identical goal to the first goal just before half time with a shot being well saved by Andrew only for him to parry it into the path of the same player sneaking in on the back post to score from close range. The half time team talk seemed to work as straight from the kick off we were forcing Burpham back into their own half of the pitch, with attack after attack, including a couple of shots from Ben and a long range effort from Jack. Our passing was a lot more fluid with Luke doing some brilliant runs down the left wing interchanging well and putting in a couple of fantastic crosses just needing a touch from someone to put the ball into the net. Harry started to find his form making some runs down the right wing and passing well with Simran and Tom. It wasn’t long before we got the goal we deserved with Tom striking a fantastic goal from outside the area, and from that point on there was only really one team in the game with goal efforts from Sam, Harry and Simran. Our defence was a lot more composed in the 2nd half with Jack, Ben and Marcus looking very comfortable on the ball and bringing the ball out rather then “hoofing” down field, and marking the quick Burpham front players and not giving them any room to move. It was only a matter of time for the equalising goal to come from a fierce cross from Tom that rebounded into the goal off one of the Burpham Players. I’m sure that Sam would have scored if it hadn’t hit their player as he was lurking ready to pounce. We had plenty of more opportunities to score the winning goal in normal time but the Burpham defence and goalkeeping stood firm to send the game into extra time at 2-2. Once again we were the stronger team in both halves of extra time but could not score the vital goal, so the game went to the dreaded Penalty Shoot out. 0-0 - They win the toss and decided to take the 1st kick which their player struck wide of the goal. 0-1 - Tom then stepped up to take our 1st penalty and struck an unstoppable shot into the bottom right hand corner of the net. 0 -1 - Their star striker who scored both their goals then stepped up but Andrew made a good diving save to his left 0 -1 - The Burpham goalkeeping saved Harry’s penalty 0-1 – Andrew dive the right way again to his right tipping the ball round the post 0 – 2 – Simran coolly stepped up and lashed another unstoppable shot into the corner 0-2 – Andrew saved his 3rd penalty of the shoot out this time struck right down the middle towards him and therefore meaning we didn’t have to take our remaining 2 penalties. I don’t think anyone could envisage this fantastic result after the below par 1st half performance - but in the end it was a well deserved win for the Gladiators that takes us into the draw for the next round.
